Readfield, Kennebec County, Maine was originally incorporated in 1771 as part of Winthrop. Twenty years later residents voted almost unanimously to separate from Winthrop, and Readfield became incorporated on March 11, 1791. LUCE, Shubael 1790 US Census Winthrop 1-3-2-0-0

Luce, Shubael He was born 1754 in Tisbury, MA the son of Beriah and Remember (Foster) Luce. He married Mary Attsett.  He was a Revolutionary War veteran, serving in Capt. Smith’s Company in MA. He was an innkeeper in Chilmark, MA before removing to Winthrop, ME where he was a blacksmith. He settled in that part of Winthrop (about 1780), that later became Readfield, on his father's homestead. He conveyed lots to sons Thomas and Attsett in 1816 and 1824. He served in the American Revolution; Capt. Smith’s Company. He registered his children with the town clerk on April 12, 1804.

  1. I am a DNA match as a descendant of this man. There are many of us, evidently. I descend via Betsey who married Thomas Stone. They are my great-grandmother's great grandparents (through her father). Her maiden name was Stone. I love hearing about them! Thank you so much for sharing!
